Summer 2022 - Week 12 - Final Week

I had high hopes of getting this post done before school started. But, well that didn't happen.  And then I had plans to finish it with all the free time I'd have while the kids were in school, but that didn't happen either. (Spoiler Alert for the next post - I was VERY busy and didn't have near as much free time as I imagined.)

But, now it's Saturday and my body has put up a protest against doing ANYTHING.  After a super long nap - where I had dreams about napping - I've mustered up the energy to try to get some writing done.

This post will cover the last full week of Summer Vacation. Hopefully I'll also have enough energy to write about the next week which was half vacation/half school.  In these two posts we'll be uncovering the answer to the question "What happened in the last two weeks to make Valerie so tired right now?"

First up we have to talk about Sunday August 7th.  This was the day after my graduation party.  And if you recall, my in-laws had taken Veronica home with them after the party.  After church on Sunday the house was SUPER quiet. Brandon and I realized that Veronica is by far the loudest member of our family.  And without her around the volume of our house is noticeably different.

Derrick seemed a little lost without Veronica. They usually rough house together. (And get very loud.) On Sunday afternoon he just seemed to be like, "Um, what am I supposed to do."

When Charlotte and Lydia went to girls camp we hadn't missed them too much.  Most of the time it felt like they were just in their room or downstairs crafting. But Veronica was noticeably missing.  It wasn't just the decibel change. I didn't realize how much she talks to me until she was gone.  There was no one asking me, "Mom, I have a question." Or telling me random theories. I also missed the sounds of her playing with her stuffed animals in her room.

For her part she had a fabulous time at my in-laws. She slept in a different guest bed every night. Got to eat at McDonalds several times, and loved all the one on one attention.

Monday was Middle School Registration Day.  Charlotte and Lydia were so excited.  We went over to the school and picked up their schedules.  Then we waited in a line to paid for their lockers.  (Lockers at this school are optional and cost $10.) I wondered if they wanted to share one, but they said they wanted their own. They did ask to have them next to each other.

Then we went to the lockers and I showed them how to open the locks.  They were a little skeptical of my instructions to pass the second number.  I told them, "Hey I opened vaults on a daily basis when I worked at Snow Basin and Yellowstone. I know what I'm saying."  (Though inside I was having flashbacks to my own tricky lockers in Jr High.) I was pretty happy when I got each of their locks open on the first try.

The girls practiced a few times and then figured the locks out.

Then we walked around and found their classrooms.  I'd been imagining things would be set up like my Jr High where all the English teachers were in one hall and all the math teachers were in another.  I remembered hurrying from hall to hall with every classroom change. But that's not how this middle school is set up.   All the 6th grade teachers are in one wing of the main building. The girls basically have to go from one classroom to another that's only a few doors down.

The Middle school has 3 main buildings.  A building is where most of their classes are.  Charlotte will have Orchestra in C Building.  Lydia has a elective class that rotates through a subject each quarter so she'll go to B building for gym and art and then C building for Drama.

Charlotte and Lydia have one class together - science. They are excited about that.

We left the school feeling very confident about Middle School.  At least I did.  I felt much better knowing that they really didn't have to walk far for each class.

We stopped by my work and picked up a fake palm tree that one of my co-workers didn't want. It was just too big for any of our offices at work.  But it looks great on my patio.

I've wanted something like this for the patio ever since we went to Vegas in the spring. It looks so fun.
In the afternoon the other set of twins came over.  Here are all four girls comparing schedules. I think they all have at least one class together.
I went to work for a while and had a huge stack of payments come in. Normally payments are spread out over the week, but this time most of them decided to show up on Monday. It was pretty fun to do, but also not what I was expecting. Plus I had a lot to catch up on from being at the office so rarely the last few days of the last week.

That evening after the heat of the day had mostly disappeared I went outside and planted the Rose of Sharron that my sisters had bought me.  I took this picture in the fading light.
Here's a better picture I took the next day.  I have big plans for this side yard. I plan to put in a lilac bush between the two windows.  I want it to grow big enough to cover both windows.  These windows face west and can get pretty toasty in the summer. I think a lilac is just what they need.  The Rose of Sharron should also grow big enough to cover the window near it.

But in the meantime its just a little bundle of happiness.  All the original blooms fell off it in this picture, but new ones showed up the next day. They bloom all summer which is why I wanted one.
While the kids were still in bed that morning I sat down with my list and ordered all their school supplies. This is so much easier than trying to do it in person.

Derrick had been with Miss Natalie while I took the twins to registration on Monday.  He was supposed to go with her again on Tuesday, but she ended up getting sick. This actually worked out well for us because it meant we could leave earlier to pick up Veronica.  The plan was to drive to Snowville, Utah which is the halfway point between my inlaws house and my house.  They'd bring Veronica. I'd bring the Twins and we'd do a "prisoner exchange."

We'd been planning to do it about 2:00 PM, but we were able to move it up to 12:00.  This minimized the amount of time we'd be driving in the car without air-conditioning in the hot afternoon.

So we put the twins suitcases in the car and started driving to Utah.  The drive was pretty uneventful and lasted about 90 minutes.  When we got to Snowville Derrick said something like, "this small town is beautiful."

Veronica and Steve and Jacque were already there. It was good to see Veronica again. She'd had a good time, but she was also happy to see me. Eight is a little young to be away from your parents for 4 days.

Charlotte and Lydia were excited for their time with their grandparents. They didn't stay long. They were putting their suitcases in the car almost as soon as we got there.

Derrick, Veronica, and I turned around and headed back to Twin Falls. The drive was another 90 minutes. So in total we drove 3 hours.  But this was better than either me or my in-laws driving 6 hours in one day.

When we got back to Twin Falls we stopped at McDonalds and ordered Slushies. This was a reward especially for Derrick who had spent 3 hours in a hot car on a trip basically to no where.

I'd thought we'd go to the pool or something, but Veronica just wanted to chill out at home.  And later that evening she started saying she didn't feel well. She didn't want to eat her dinner and kept saying she was freezing. She ended up laying in my bed while I put away laundry.

At some point I was worried enough about her that I gave her a covid test.  But it came out negative.

I told her, "maybe you were just homesick, but waited to feel sick until you got home?"

She still wasn't feeling better on Wednesday. But I had a whole slew of errands I wanted to run.  So I had her and Derrick come with me and wait in the car.  That worked okay for things like picking up books at the library or dropping off payments from RV repair customers at the bank.  But it didn't work so well for Lowes where I knew I'd be in the store for a while.  Veronica hadn't brought her shoes, but I convinced her to ride in the cart.  Derrick thought it was funny to push her.

We bought sand for a new strawberry bed I was putting in.  (The plants were dividing like crazy so I needed a third bed. We also bought mulch for the new tree. And some tomato twisty ties because I'd used up all the ones from the year before. It was a fun trip.
Back at home our school supplies were starting to show up.  Oh this was so easy!
At some point Veronica felt really warm to me so I decided to take her temperature - again.  I'd been taking it all along, but it always read something like 98 degrees.  That's all the thermometer ever reads. In fact, I was pretty certain it was defective because in the 2.5 years since we started worrying about COVID and fevers it had NEVER registered anything above 100 degrees. I was saying all that for the billionth time and suddenly the thermometer beeped and said something like 100.8 degrees.  I was like, "WHAT you can actually go that high?"

Veronica just wasn't doing well.  She had a sore throat, a headache, and a fever (apparently). She was also just really tired. But she wasn't sick enough to take to the doctor so we just rode it out.

That afternoon we watched the movie Clue.  It had been on our list of movies to watch ever since we started playing the game. Veronica snuggled up to me.  I'd given her an ibuprofen before we started the movie.  She was super hot feeling. But about 30 minutes into the movie I felt her fever just disappear and her body cooled down to normal.  Yay for medicine kicking in.

That evening when things cooled down I was able to get a lot of stuff done in the garden. Here's a bunch of pictures of the garden.  The tomatoes were doing fabulous.
Here are the zinnias in my front yard.
These did so well growing from seed.  I'm going to plant more of them next year.
And look at this cute black eyed susan.
Here's the rose of sharron with mulch and blooms.
My raspberries have been producing for about a week.  But it was only on Wednesday that I stopped eating them long enough to take a picture. So far none of the berries have made it into the house. But we haven't got to the main fall crop. When those come on I'm sure I'll have enough to make jam.
Brandon and Derrick and Veronica did stuff in the garage while I was gardening.
Here's the new bed of Strawberries. I'm not sure how well this will do in the summer because it gets a lot of sun in the afternoon.  I might have to make some sort of shade wall on the west side.  But for now it was an empty bed that I could fill up with more strawberry plants.
On Thursday morning I took some selfies with my tomatoes.  Some of them are getting taller than me.

Earlier in the week I'd sent an email to my co-workers. It basically said, "Hey I'm super busy getting my kids ready for back to school stuff so my schedule will be unpredictable for the next week."  I felt bad being so unpredictable, but that's just the way it was.

On Thursday I wanted to take Derrick and Veronica swimming in the afternoon. So I decided to go into work at 11:00. First we went grocery shopping early in the morning and bought lots of food.  Derrick likes to get a different pizza every time we go shopping and then cook it for lunch when we get home. This time Veronica wanted to buy her own too. I helped them make their pizzas and then they went into the basement to watch a movie and eat their pizzas while I went to work.

So I go wandering into work at a time that just happened to fit my schedule for the day.  It just happened to be the absolute best time I could have shown up.

Our boss was out of town and only one other clinician was seeing a client at that time. It was supposed to be a routine appt so she'd been fine with our receptionist taking her lunch break.  But pretty soon it turned into a not routine appt. The client needed to be hospitalized and that got complicated pretty quick. Staff from the mental health facility had to come out and assess the client.  A police officer had to come. The parent had to come.

So I ended up doing my work for the day at the front desk while I directed various people what office to go into (and was a presence so the client wouldn't try to sneak out.)

To further complicate things, our receptionist had a doctors appt during her lunch break and had a reaction to a simple procedure.  So she was late coming back to work.

I'd started out the day feeling guilty that I'd rearranged my schedule for something silly like swimming.  But by the end of the 3.5 hours I was at the front desk I was like, "Wow, this was EXACTLY the best time for me to come in today."

I also realized that the clinician dealing with all this was doing it over her own lunch break. She had clients come in almost as soon as things with this client were resolved. So I asked her if I could order anything for her from door dash.  The look of relief on her face was unforgettable. I was happy to get her lunch so she could continue on with her day.

I was honored that I could help in even a small way. I kept thinking of a teenage girl from a family that I grew up with who died by suicide 5 years ago. She hadn't had access to a lot of mental health resources.  I sometimes wonder if things would have turned out differently if she'd had a counselor who could have seen the signs and refused to let her leave her office until she was in safe hands. So it was no problem to make sure my dedicated coworker got some lunch after she'd spent hours making sure her client was safe.

I get so focused on the billing and insurance side of my job that I forget that my coworkers are sometimes literally saving lives.  That's a big deal.  And it makes me happy that they can focus on doing what they do best because I'm there to take care of the money side of things.

When I got home I did take Derrick and Veronica swimming.  They both easily passed the swim check and had a great time playing in the water for about an hour.

That evening I didn't feel like doing much.  Veronica and I ended up on the couch taking turns playing Mario.  I haven't played Mario much since I finished my hard school classes and didn't need a distraction any more.

But it was really fun to play with Veronica.  And then it was REALLY cool when I found a way to warp to Level 8.  I'd never done that before.  Veronica and I were both freaking out with how cool it was.

Friday was an incredibly busy day.  It actually started early in the morning when Veronica woke up crying and came into our bed.  This used to be a nightly occurrence, but hasn't happened in like 18 months.  So it was very unexpected. In the morning she was complaining about her throat and a headache again.

This had me concerned.  The girl had all the symptoms of covid and we were about to go out of town for the weekend to go to lagoon and see family. I did not want to bring covid along with us.  So I did another test on her. And got another negative.

So all our plans were still on.

Also Veronica seemed to be doing better after breakfast. Which was good because we had another morning of errands to run.  Derrick went with Miss Natalie for the morning and Veronica went with me to run errands.

One of the stops was the school.  I'd been trying to get into the school all week to get into the PTO closet. PTO was planning to sell apparel at the school's open house on Monday.  But I'd discovered errors with our apparel order.  The vinyl window decals didn't work. And we were missing 15 truckers caps.

I'd been communicating with the local apparel company.  They were fine exchanging the vinyl decals. But they were a little reluctant about the missing hats.  The lady I was working with wondered if they might be in a second box.  So I needed to get into the closet to get the decals and I needed to look for this mythical second box with the hats.

But every time I went to the school it was closed.  The teachers and staff were at district trainings. That was the case on Friday morning too. So I emailed the principal to find out if they would be open at all that day and Veronica and I went to my office to take care of about an hour of work.

Then we went home and packed for our weekend trip.

The principal got back to me and told me the school would be open again at 1:00.  So I went over there around 2:00 and started hunting through the closet.  I found a lot of interesting things, but not a box with the 15 missing hats.

I took the box of apparel that we did have and took it with me to the apparel company.  I showed the guy who helped me the box and was like, "This is how it looked when we got it."  He took me at my word and we decided the best course of action was to credit our account.

He also told me the vinyl decals would be done by Monday afternoon.

With that taken care of I took all the apparel home and started going through it.  In addition to the hats and decals we had some shirts.  These had originally been ordered by the school for the teachers.  But the sizing had been mixed up and of the 60 shirts ordered 30 had been way too small for any adult to fit.  But they did fit children.  So PTO bought the shirts from the school to sell.

I'd found some picture frames for displaying prices in the closet. I printed off new price lists to put into the frames. I also figured out how to generate a QR code that would direct people to the apparel store.  That way if we didn't have something in a size or color people liked it would be easy to help them find the store.

While I was taking care of that Brandon was packing the car.  Normally we leave for these weekend trips as soon as he gets home from work at 2:00.  But I was not interested in driving in the afternoon without our air-conditioned. So we planned to leave around 5:00.  This ended up being great because I got all that PTO stuff done. I really don't know when else I would have had time to do that.

At five we started driving to Utah. This was pretty much deja vu from Tuesday.  We stopped for a bathroom break in Snowville and Derrick was like, "oh I remember this place."

When we started heading up the canyon to my inlaws house we saw a huge rainbow. It stayed in front of us the whole time we drove.
We got to the house around 8:00. It was so good to see Charlotte and Lydia again. I think I missed them a little bit more this time than I had when they were at girls camp. I don't know what was different.

They told us all about their visit.  They'd got into the habit of watching TV with Bestemore and Bestefar each evening.  They said, "We love Hogan's Heros, and Andy Griffith, and Gomer Pile."  It was really funny.

I put Derrick and Veronica to bed and then I sat on Charlotte and Lydia's bed and talked to them for a long time.  We had a really good time talking.

The next morning we packed up all our stuff and took it to my sister Emily's house in Layton.  We'd be doing some family stuff in Salt Lake on Sunday so it made sense to stay at her house that night.  Then we went to Lagoon.

We got there around 10:30 and dropped our food off at the pavilions and then went to see if the Log Flume had a short line.  It did!  The kids all shared a log.  Someone in line behind us asked if they were quadruplets.
We were in the log behind them and I was able to take this picture of them on the chain hill.
Here they are chasing a peacock after the ride.
It's under the table.
We saw that the line for rattle snake rapids was super short so we went over there.  For some reason I was into taking pictures more than I had been on other visits.  Here are Derrick and Veronica after we were in our boat.
Charlotte and Lydia.
And me and Brandon.
The ride was fun and we got really wet.  When we got off the line was still short so we decided to go again.  Here are the kids waiting in line.

And me and Brandon.
We got even more wet on that ride.  This second run was very "spashy."  I took pictures when we were waiting to get off.  Lydia had a dump water out of her shoe.
Here's Derrick and Charlotte.
Me and Veronica.  (She was "dumping" water out of her sandal."
And Lydia and Brandon.
Here's the line of boats waiting to go back out.
The line was still short so we decided to go AGAIN.  By this time we were just giddy with how fun this was.  They put two other people into the boat with us so it was really heavy on this run.  We didn't seem to splash as much.  Instead the water seemed to come over the seats in waves.  Once again we were all soaked at the end and Lydia had to empty her shoes again.
This was supposed to be of me and Brandon, but we had some extras jump in.
We probably could have gone again, because the line was still relatively short, but three times was enough.  We were all SOAKING. It would be hours before we were all dry.

We decided to go ride more rides, but we weren't in a hurry at all.  We've been on just about everything.  We didn't feel rushed to pack as many different rides into the day. So we ended up looking around the buildings in Pioneer Village for the first time EVER.  (Like seriously, I didn't even know these buildings were here until like May of this year.)

Then we went over to Air Race.  Here are the twins in various stages of excitement about the ride.  (Lydia wanted to go on the Ferris Wheel first. But she's been outvoted.)
Brandon and Derrick ended up on the ride ahead of us.  I took a video of them. They are in the purple plane.

After Air race we split up.  Brandon took Derrick and Lydia on the ferris wheel and I took Derrick on Veronica on the Tilt of Whirl. Here we are before the ride started.

Just me and Veronica.
Just me and Derrick.
We got super sick on it. But it was super fun.

Then Derrick and Veronica wanted to ride the Jet Star.  My main goal for this trip was to NOT ride the Jet Star so I told them to go ahead and do that themselves.  Brandon came over and he waited for Derrick and Veronica while I took the twins and got in line for Cannibal.  The idea was that he'd come and wait in line for Cannibal too with Derrick and Veronica and I'd be off the ride in time to get Veronica from him.

Well the ride ended up shutting down briefly for technical difficulties. The twins and I were far enough along that it was worth waiting in line.  But Brandon took Derrick and Veronica somewhere else.

The wait was only about 10 minutes and we were on the ride in no time.  I'm still afraid of the elevator and the first drop.  But I really like the rest of the ride.  It's always worth it. I tried to take a picture when we came back and were waiting to disembark, but that went faster than anticipated and by the time my camera was on we were running down the exit ramp.

Here's Brandon and Derrick and Veronica on the Paratrooper.
By this point it was early afternoon and we were starving so we went back to the pavilions and found our coolers.  Derrick used chips to illustrate himself high up on the rocket and Veronica down below looking up at him.
I convinced everyone that we needed a 15 minute nap. So we laid down on the grass.  I set the timer and we chilled out for 15 minutes.  (We'll most of us did.  Derrick ran around finding feathers. He pronounces them fedders.)
After the break we split up again.  Brandon took the older three to the rocket and some other "big" rides while I took Veronica to "little kid land."  She's made it pretty clear that she will not go on the rocket or cannibal any time soon.  And I figured instead of pressuring her onto those we should just go enjoy some of the rides that she'll outgrow in the next few years.

So we went on the Lady Bug Drop. (Which is a smaller version of the rocket that still packs a pretty good punch with it's drop.)
We also did a ship ride and Puff the little dragon.  (The last time I'd been on that ride was when I was 12.)

Brandon's coworker was also at Lagoon so we met up with him and his family for a minute.  Then we went back to the rides.

Derrick was still bummed that he'd missed out on Cannibal earlier that day.  Brandon was not really interested in taking him (he didn't want to wait in the hot sun at that time of day) but I knew there would be no living with Derrick if he didn't get to go on Cannibal so I agreed to take him.

The line was long when we got there. I had to go to the bathroom so I told Derrick to wait in line while I ran to the bathroom.  When I got back I was so surprised to see Derrick had moved up at least 50 feet.  That line was moving FAST!

That's actually one of the great things about Cannibal.  Each car can hold 12 people and they are constantly filling the cars and emptying new ones.  The line can move a lot faster than a ride like Air Race that can only hold 20 people, takes 2 minutes to ride, and takes 3-4 minutes to have everyone get off and new people get on.

Here's a picture of us in front of Cannibal.
And here's a car doing that first big drop.
When we made it to the front of the line we ended up assigned to the front row of a car. This was a first for me. It was terrifying.  But also really cool.  Derrick kept saying, "Mom, open your eyes." as we went up the elevator.  And I tried to keep them open for the drop, but I just couldn't.

I called Brandon when we were done. They'd just got in line for the Wild Mouse. We agreed that we were all about done for the day.  So I said Derrick and I would pickup the cooler and then we could all meet at the splash pad.

Derrick had a blast with the Splash Pad. He'd play with the little jets of water. Then he would go over to the fountain of water and stick his whole head under water.  People would laugh when they saw him do that.  He ended up completely soaked.
Here are all four kids playing in the fountain when Brandon and the girls joined us.
And here I am with a happy selfie.  This had been such a fun trip to Lagoon.  I'd felt so relaxed the whole day.
Charlotte and Lydia laid down like this on the way back to Emily's house.
But they perked up again when we got to Emily's.  All four kids tapped into hidden energy reserves and jumped on her trampoline for hours.

Emily made us pizza and we had a great time talking with her.  I floated the idea of Brandon and I sneaking back to Lagoon for a date later that evening. Emily was cool with that.  But then Charlotte stepped on a big staple and was crying and I realized that all my kids were super exhausted.  I didn't want to leave Emily with 4 time bombs in the form of children.

So we had a chill evening and made sure the kids were in bed by 9:00.  Then Brandon and I went to the store and bought ice cream. We came back and shared it with Emily and David on their balcony/patio.  We had a fun time talking with them.

We'd planned to sleep on our air mattress in the living room, but Brandon suggested we sleep on the trampoline. Emily found us some blankets and we made a little bed on the trampoline.

We were out there for about an hour just enjoying the nice breeze. Around midnight it started sprinkling.  But it was light enough it didn't really matter.  By 3:00 though I realized how wet our blankets were and decided to move into the house. Still it had been really fun to be on the trampoline as long as we had.

In the morning we got ready for church.  We were going to my cousin Heidi's mission homecoming. The meeting started at 10:30, but we decided to leave Emily's a little early and swing by down town Salt Lake City.  All through our drive down Derrick had been pointing to signs that said Salt Lake City.  It's been a long time since we actually went to Salt Lake so I wanted him to have come context for that.

Also we wanted to see the progress being made on the temple.  And wow, did we ever see that!

We got out and parked, but quickly realized there wasn't much to see.
So we walked around the Conference Center and headed back to the car.  But the trip wasn't a complete waste because I got this PERFECT picture of the kids.  They never would have done this if I'd asked them to. It just happened spontaneously.
We wanted to drive by LDS hospital where everyone except me and Veronica had been born.  That ended up taking longer than planned because of some other construction.  We were late to the Homecoming, but made it in by the end of the opening song, so it all worked out.

After church we went to my Aunt Julie and Uncle Mark's house.  It's been a long time since we've been there.  The kids kind of remembered it.  Actually its been a long time since my kids have seen a lot of my family.  I felt like I was introducing them to a lot of people.

We had a GREAT time talking.  My parents were there, my Grandma Mary Ann was there, three of my aunts were there, so were three of my uncles. I visited with 4 cousins.  And Emily and Hillary were there with their families too.

Julie and Mark always serve great food so that was fun too.

Derrick looked all over their house and even went into the basement.  He said, "This is a good basement."  He also checked some of their cupboards.  I was like, "I think you should have a career as a home inspector."  Then he figured out how to work their TV and get onto Netflix.

Eventually it was time to go.  Hillary had invited us over to her house and had even agreed to do some hair cuts.  This was a big deal because she had outpatient surgery on Monday and was still recovering. But she said that haircutting is her brand of morphine so it would be fine.

She gave Charlotte and Lydia new school cuts.  Lydia's hair is about the same length it was before.  But Charlotte cut off about 4 -5 inches.  Which means its the same length as Lydia.  Their hair is one of the ways I tell the girls apart so Heaven Help us all now.

I made sure to help Hillary a lot while we were there.  I swept up the hair so she didn't have to. I also had her lay on the couch with Penny.  That's all Penny has wanted for DAYS so she was happy.  She ended up falling asleep on Hillary.

My kids kept Walter entertained.  The house ended up being so calm that Brandon and Joe were able to take naps.

I made dinner so Hillary didn't have to worry about that. I'd wanted to go down and help her all week so it made me happy that we could help a little bit on Sunday.

She told me, "It would just be another boring evening of recovery without you.  So it was nice to have you to talk to."

We stayed until about 8:00 and then drove back to Emily's.  We got our stuff.  (And our stupid dog) from Emily's and started driving back to Idaho.

It's a good thing Brandon had had that nap because I was super tired. I was especially struggling by the last 10 miles.  I think I fell asleep 5 times during that last little bit.

We got home and everyone went straight to bed.

I was grateful that we didn't start school on Monday this week.  But that didn't mean Monday would be an easy day.  I had a full list of things to do.

We'll talk about Monday- and the rest of the week - in the next post.

Thanks for reading.
