In theory this should be a short post. I haven't done an update since January 4th, but I feel like we haven't done very much in the past two weeks. Still, this is my family we are talking about and it seems like we always have 500 hundred things going on in a given week so this might be a long post.
Let's start out with talking about Saturday January 5. The theme for this day could have been "Things that we looked forward to for a long time that turned out kind of disappointing."
In the morning Brandon took Derrick fishing. Derrick told everyone who would listen (and several who didn't want to) that he wanted a Lightning McQueen Fishing Pole for Christmas. He was THRILLED to get one on Christmas Morning. And then he started talking nonstop about "going fishing with Daddy." Brandon's parents gave us money for a family experience as a family Christmas present. We decided that we should use some of that money and buy a 2019 fishing license for Brandon. Brandon bought the license a few days after the new year. On Saturday he and Derrick happily set out to go fishing at the Edison Fitcher Nature Area in Pocatello.
The trip was not what Derrick expected. He didn't like fishing in the cold. The Portneuf River wasn't frozen, but he didn't like fishing on the river. He wanted to fish on the pond. But the pond was frozen. Brandon tried cracking it open for Derrick but that didn't really work.
When Derrick and Brandon came back home Derrick was very sad. We've told him that he can try again when there is grass outside. He's given up on talking about fishing for the time being and has moved on to talking non-stop about getting a puppy.
After lunch we went to Deleta, the local roller skating rink, as our reward for reading all 100 Scripture Mastery Scriptures as a family over the past several months.
Charlotte, Lydia, and Derrick went to Deleta once a week during the summer as part of Adventure Camp. They have wanted to go back as a family. Veronica has never been to Deleta and so she was looking forward to going to this wonderful place that she'd heard so much about. Brandon thought about trip with a little bit of trepidation. He'd gone to Deleta with Charlotte and Lydia for a birthday party and had had a slightly unsteady experience. He said he'd literally had to tell himself, "you've done Army Basic Training and SERE school. You can handle roller skating."
I was really nervous about going to Deleta for several reasons. 1. I've never been there and I always get anxious before I go to a new place, 2. Last time I went roller skating was when I was 12 and I fell A LOT, and 3. I wasn't sure if my knee could handle roller skating. My knee is pretty much all healed from the car accident, but I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to try to skate on it - especially with how klutzy I can be.
But the kids wanted to go so I gathered my courage, shoved down my fear, and we went.
The three older kids were so excited to be there. Charlotte was especially good at helping us know where to go. We paid at a little window and then went into the rink. We got our shoes and I was surprised at how heavy they were. It was like having 10 pound weights on each leg. This was definitely not going to be good for my knee.
Getting all the kids into their shoes was not easy. I don't know how the day care leaders did this with 20+ kids each week. I could hardly handle lacing up four pairs of shoes. Finally everyone was ready and we went out on the floor.
Charlotte was the best of all of us. It took her a minute to get warmed up, but soon she was zipping around the rink like she'd done it all her life (or at least all last summer.)
When the kids first started going to Deleta I'd worried about Derrick. I was certain that a roller skating rink with music playing would be terrible for his sensory issues. But apparently it was never a problem. In fact, Derrick LOVED skating and all summer long we heard reports about how he was a natural. I expected to see him zipping around the rink, so I was surprised that he hung onto the wall and went rather slow. But he enjoyed himself and that's important.
I guess I never got a picture with just Lydia in it, but here's a picture with Charlotte, Lydia and Derrick. Lydia was somewhere between Charlotte and Derrick in skill. She wasn't as fast as Charlotte, but she wasn't a wall hugger like Derrick. And how did Veronica do? Well not great. In hindsight we should have seen this coming. Veronica is barely steady on her feet as she is. She's always had a bit of a "leap before looking" way of getting around the world. She's always tripping, falling, slipping, and bonking. Add wheels to that and things don't turn out very well. We'd rented a little skate-gate walker type thing, and that sort of helped, but she was having a hard time. The poor girl is sobbing in this picture.
Brandon tapped into his Army training again and had a decent time skating. And here am I. I was pretty proud of myself for being able to skate as well as I did. I was never very fast and I stuck to the wall, but I only fell once (while trying to help Veronica) and I didn't hurt my knee. There was one point at the beginning where I felt my knee kind of torque in a weird way. But I quickly figured out that if I didn't swing my legs out too far my knee was fine.
The kids skated for about 45 minutes at the most and then they wanted to do their real favorite thing about Deleta - buy stuff at the little toy and candy machines. Each of the kids had raided their piggy banks for this.Veronica liked this part. I think next time we'll just take the kids to an arcade or something.
We had a good time at Deleta, but I think it will be a while before we go skating as a family again.
When we got home we still had a lot of afternoon left. Brandon had been home with the kids for the past two weeks so I figured he could use some "me time." I took all the kids on a walk to the library so Brandon could enjoy an empty house. The library is only a few blocks away and we like walking there. The kids wanted me to take a picture of the Portneuf. We still think it's so cool that we live so close to the river.
My kids favorite part of the library is the bank of I-pads. I like that I can park my kids on the I-pads for an hour. They all get to play on them at the same time and then we are done. Its much better than owning one I-pad that the kids all fight over. I found a new book for myself (Lauren Graham's Talking as Fast as I Can) and read that while the kids played on the I-pads.
On Sunday we had Stake Conference so we didn't get to experience the new two hour church schedule. Instead we got to sit on hard folding chairs for two hours. I was so happy when we were able to stand up for the rest him. Overall the kids were well behaved and it's nice to know that we've reach the stage where Stake Conference isn't much harder than regular church.
Monday was the first day back to school for Brandon and the kids. I was not looking forward to getting the kids up at 6:30. We'd slept in past 8:00 nearly every day of Christmas Break so I expected a 6:30 wake up time to be met with much resistance. But actually the kids did just fine. It seemed they were ready to be back in a routine again.
On Tuesday Veronica and I enjoyed our day off. We hung around the house in the morning. In the afternoon we went to the school for Art Mom's and Dad's in Derrick's Class. I'm not an official volunteer for Derrick's class, but I like to go and help Derrick. This time they made designs in paint and then laid a paper on top to transfer the design. They turned out really cool. Both Derrick and Veronica did theirs in yellow paint with purple paper.
The kids were asked to read while they waited for everyone to be done. A little girl who sits near Derrick offered to read to him. He sat next to her and looked at the book with her. It was so sweet. Derrick's teacher showed me some of the things Derrick has done lately. He writes in a journal every day. The teacher writes out some sentences on little white boards and then Derrick copies them into his journal.
I also got to see Derrick's picture schedule. This has helped a lot in the past few months. His Special Ed did a great job of getting a picture of Derrick doing each activity. He had fun showing it to me.
When Art Mom's was over Veronica and I went to the front office and ordered the school year book. We planned to pick up the kids after school, but there was still 40 minutes left of school. So we went on a walk around the nature center. It was such a pretty day.
The sun was shining and the air was clear. When ever I'm in this part of Pocatello I almost start crying because I love it so much. It's going to be hard to leave.
We went back to the school and met the kids at the flag pole. Then we went Alameda Vision so the kids could have their eyes checked. I'd taken Charlotte in for an appointment before Christmas. She needed reading glasses. I didn't have concerns about any of the other kids' eyes, but the doctor said it was a good idea to bring them in for a check up anyway. So when I picked up Charlotte's glasses before Christmas I made appointments for the other three kids. That appointment had seemed really far away when I made it, but it came up fast.
The kids were excellent at the doctors. They had fun watching the fish in the fish tank and watching Fixer Upper on the TV.
Veronica went first. She did really well and had so much fun talking to the tech. When it was time to go into the doctors exam room she happily climbed into the chair and waited so confidently. I was bouncing around between the waiting room, the screening room, and the exam room so I was glad that she was doing so well.
We knew our eye doctor briefly in Fort Hood. His family was in our ward for the first 2 or 3 months that we lived in Texas. I thought it was kind of interesting that I'd been pregnant with Veronica when we first met him and now Veronica was here and eye check up.
Veronica did great talking to the doctor. The doctor asked if I wanted him to dilate Veronica's eyes. I said yes and then went to check on Derrick in the screening room. Soon the doctor came and told me Veronica was scared of the eye drops. Since she was 5 she didn't have to have them dilated so we decided to skip it this year. Still Veronica was very sad. She cried a lot. I think our busy afternoon had caught up to her.
I took her out to the lobby where Charlotte comforted her.
Derrick did great. I was especially impressed when he appropriately answered the doctors questions like, "what's your name?" and "how old are you?" Progress! Derrick was fine with getting his eyes dilated. He picked out a little toy car as a prize.
Lydia also did well, though she was a little nervous. I sat with her in the exam room. Charlotte came and found me and told me that Derrick had put his toy car into the fish tank. (Face Palm.) Charlotte stayed with Lydia while I went to help Derrick. We had to get a lecture from the front desk lady, but we got the car back.
Lydia did fine with her exam and also had her eyes dilated. All the kids got their eyes looked at one last time and then it was time to go. The front desk lady gave everyone a pair of glasses even though only two of them had dilated eyes.
And that's how I earned the "Took four kids to the eye doctor" parenting badge. On Wednesday we finally had a snowstorm with good packing snow. When I came home from work I found the kids had made a snowman in the back yard. I love this picture where they are all holding hands with the snowman.
Charlotte and Lydia had an Activity Days activity at the church. Brandon was scheduled to donate plasma at the same time so I was in charge of taking the girls to the church. I decided we'd all go to the church and Derrick and Veronica and I would play in the gym while Charlotte and Lydia had their activity. That was easier than going to the church, going back home, and then going back to the church.
Derrick and Veronica were so excited to play in the church gym. Derrick brought a car (a different one than the fish tank one) and had fun playing with that on the floor. The cub scouts were having their meeting, but Derrick didn't really pay attention to them at first. Then the cub scouts started playing twister and Derrick decided to join in. He had so much fun. I loved seeing him interact with the boys.
Veronica and I played with a basket ball. We bounced it back and forth and she got really good at catching it.
On Thursday the kids made a wife for the snowman. They also added some children.
Here's Derrick rolling a snow ball. I like that we have a big back yard here. I definitely want that at our next house.
After dinner I went to the church for the first weekday meeting of 2019. I was a little nervous for this activity. It was about Family History and Temple work. I'd asked 4 women from the ward to share their experiences with doing Family History and Temple work. We haven't had great attendance numbers at our last several activities and so I was worried that we'd only have those four women and me at the activity. I was prepared to give a speech about how we this was our first activity of the year and that we were building momentum for our activities in 2019.
I had done a lot of advertising for this activity including posting this meme in our ward Relief Society Facebook group. I made this meme myself and it makes me laugh every time I looked at it.
I set up a round table because I wanted the meeting to feel more like a discussion among friends rather than a lesson or a lecture. One lady arrived and helped me set up chairs. She asked how many chairs I wanted. I told her to put as many around the table as she could. I said, "I'll be surprised if we have enough people here to surround the table."
I turned out very surprised. TWELVE (12!) women came. And we had a wonderful time. Each of the four sisters who talked about Family History and Temple work shared such great experiences. We all learned a lot and we also laughed a lot. It was exactly what I hoped for.
My favorite part of the night was when the meeting was over. Ashley had questions for Mindy and they got onto my laptop to look up some things. When they were done with that they took a minute and looked at the things that Mindy had brought. It was so cool to see a friendship deepen over a shared interest. THIS right here is why I love Relief Society.
Derrick's therapy day has moved to Friday. His therapist could tell that Derrick was pretty much done with the week. They had a rougher session than they ever had on Wednesdays. We were all done with the week. Normally Christy does family training with us after her sessions with Derrick, but we just skipped it this week. She had a headache and none of us were in the mood. We'd made it through our first week back to reality - but we were tired.
Charlotte and Lydia got into my fabric box and made a wedding dress for Wolfia out of scraps from their baptism dresses. They made a fancy shirt for Jack from a ribbon. Then they started staging a wedding between Wolfia and Jack.
Here are all the guests.
On Saturday we had a wonderful day at home. We cleaned the house, went grocery shopping, and put away laundry but pretty much did nothing else.
In the evening my parents came over for dinner. My mom brought an "ugly sweater" sugar cookie kit she'd bought after Christmas. We made the cookies and then decorated them.
Here's Charlotte's up close.
Here's Lydia working on hers.
Charlotte and Veronica.
When it was time to eat the cookies Derrick had a lot of fun.
So did Lydia.
One thing we worked on on Saturday was a making a dog based off an idea Charlotte had. We created the pattern together. We had white fabric, but Charlotte wanted the ears to be soft. So we went to Joans and bought an 8th of a yard of fleece with Charlotte's own money. We worked on the dog together on Saturday, but didn't get it done until Sunday. It was a fun project to do together. We had our first day of the new two hour church schedule. And we all loved it. Derrick apparently did excellent in primary. He didn't even have time to get into trouble before Primary was over.
Jack and Wolfia's wedding lasted for several days. Here is their car all decorated.
It says, Jest Marrd on the back.
Veronica has also been very creative lately. She loves her magnets. She likes to make them into a train for her stuffed animals.
Monday was a very important day at work. Jennifer Clark was Sworn in as the new Bannock County Treasurer. I'm still so proud to have been able to help on her campaign.
We closed our office and crowded into the Commissioners Chambers with other county employees, the families of elected officials, and the public. It was standing room only by the time I got there so I was in the back. Steve Brown, the one County Commissioner who was not being sworn in, made some great remarks. Judge Clark, who looked like he came out of central casting for a TV court drama, had each of the elected officials come in and swear their oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the State of Idaho. Several of the officials weren't the ones I'd voted for, but I really enjoyed watching them get sworn in. Bannock County has some great people working for the citizens. Great things are going to happen here.
In the afternoon we closed our office again for a retirement party for the outgoing Treasurer, Radene Barker. Radene worked for the county for something like 27 years and spent the last 12 as Treasurer. It's been a pleasure working as part of her office. Here party was really nice. We had Costco Cake and apple juice mixed with Sprite.
Tuesday was a less eventful day than the week before. Lydia had her first Ukulele lesson of the year. She was excited to show off her tuner and picks that Santa gave her for Christmas.
On Wednesday we got to do something really fun. We babysat a baby! A few weeks ago I was pondering the ways I could serve some of my ministering sisters. I have two sisters who each have little babies. I kept wishing that I was more available during the day so I could watch their babies for them. But I just don't have time for that right now. Then I realized, "duh, I could offer to watch their babies in the evening so they could go on dates with their husbands." So I texted the sisters and let them know that.
A few weeks later one of the sisters took me up on my offer. She's in school and had to do a practicum or something on Wednesday evenings. Her husband worked at that time and so she needed someone to watch their baby. It started before I got off of work, but Brandon was just fine withbeing home in time to watch the baby.
When I walked in the door on Wednesday I saw all four of my kids gathered around staring in awe at the baby. They were glued to his every move and sound during the two hours he was at our house. Derrick and Lydia are especially crazy about babies so I think they had the most fun, but Charlotte and Veronica loved him as well.
We are looking forward to next week when we get to watch him again.
Brandon had been feeling tired and grumpy all week. I kept asking him if he felt okay and he said he was fine. Well it must have been contagous somehow because I caught the "Tired Grumpies." I was tired on Wednesday and grumpy on Thursday and Friday. EVERYTHING was bothering me. So there aren't any pictures from those days.
Actually Friday wasn't half bad. My alarm went off at 6:00 and at 6:05 I got an automated phone call from the school district. It was a SNOWDAY! Thursday it has rained most of the day and then that water turned to ice which was covered by snow on Friday. I'm guessing that the bus drivers must have had some scary experiences on their way to work on Friday and the district decided it was better to just cancel school.
ISU wasn't closed so Brandon still had to go to school. He left early to give himself plenty of time to get to the airport safely. I wasn't sure what I was going to do about work since the kids were staying home. I didn't have to be to work until 9:00 though so I figured I could enjoy sleeping in and then worry about that.
At 7:30 I called the daycare and asked if they were taking school age kids that day. They said yes, as long as they were already scheduled for the afternoon. My kids were so that meant they could go to day care and I could go to work. Around 7:45 Veronica came upstairs followed by Charlotte and Lydia. They were so excited to find out it was a snow day. They were not so happy when I told them they had to go to the daycare all day. Charlotte and Lydia immediately started begging me to let them stay home alone. And then Veronica joined in with "Please let me stay home with my sisters, Please." I have lunch at 11:00 and Brandon is done with school at noon on Friday's so I knew the girls wouldn't be home alone for that long if I decided to let them stay home. (We've actually done this a couple times this school year when they've been sick on Friday's and it's worked out.) I called Brandon to make sure he was fine with coming home at noon. He said yes and so I told the girls they could stay home. They were so excited. They started making a list of all the things they would do that day.
I didn't want Derrick home alone without adult supervision so I planned to take him to the day care. I thought he'd hate that, but he was really excited. When I dropped him off he went right for the toys. I think he was happy that he didn't have to go to school. He'd had a case of the tired and grumpies on Thursday too.
I'm glad I went to work on Friday because it was a busy day. I'm nearly caught up on all the stuff I wasn't able to do when we were busy in December.
Derrick has renewed his obsession with train. All week long he'd been counting down to going to the model train museum. So on Saturday we cleaned the house and then I took Derrick and Veronica to the train museum. They had fun there as usual.
Back and home Charlotte and Lydia created motorcycles and pretended to be spies.
Derrick and Veronica set up the train set when they got home. They love to play with this together. They've gotten a lot better at playing together lately.
I went shopping with my mom. Brandon and the kids had a discussion that somehow found it's way to to topic of fake pictures on the internet. Brandon decided to show the kids how easy it is to make a fake picture. Either that or we have a shrink ray in the house somewhere.Church was good again this week. I love the new schedule and we are figuring out how to work the new curriculum in at home. (So far watching videos, looking at maps, and giving the kids a treat when we are done with our mini lesson are all good strategies.)
I worked on getting some of my memory/scrapbooks put together. Charlotte and Lydia set up a department store with all the Barbie accessories they got for Christmas.
They said, "It's just like Mabel's" (The department store on Curious George.)
Look at all those cute clothes on hangers.
Here are all the shoes.
I worked on putting the papers from Yellowstone into a binder. I found the calendar that we had on the fridge in the RV. I picked it up and then started looking for the rest of it. I couldn't believe that this was it. Our summer in Yellowstone felt so long. It's hard to believe that it only lasted 12 weeks.
We have roughly 16 weeks left until Brandon graduates. I keep thinking that is short. But seeing this calendar made me realize that we still have a lot of time before May 4th. A lot of things can happen and a lot of things will happen before Brandon graduates. There is still a lot of time left in this chapter of our lives. And that's really exciting.
