First week of Fall

Last week was  . . . something. On the one hand it was really great. Veronica turned 12. We went camping. We went to 4th wall night. There were a lot of fun things.

On the other hand I had THREE low-grade panic attacks in 7 days. That, combined with a bunch of other symptoms, made me realize it's time to go get some blood work done and see if it's time for some hormone replacement therapy because I'm probably in perimenopause.

So yeah that was fun.

But like I said, there were some good things so let's recap those!

On Monday my calendar said that Derrick had an orthodontist appointment. But part of me was like, "hmmmm, I think that's supposed to be on Tuesday."  But I couldn't call the office ahead of time to check because they opened at 8:30 when the appt was supposed to be. So we just stopped by after I dropped off Veronica. And yeah, the appointment was for Tuesday. So I just took Derrick to school and then went to work.

After school Veronica had theatre. Last year I would wait right by the door to meet her when she came out. I was so used to her having separation anxiety I didn't want her to worry about me not being there. But now she's (mostly) over that. I park down the road and then wait on the sidewalk by my car. She can still see me when she comes out the door, but she walks the block to me. While I'm waiting for her I admire this hanging baskets with giant petunias in them. I love that the city does things like this.

That evening we went to a potluck at Candy Cane park. Jori and Olyvia had planned this and invited a bunch of other families on like Sunday night. I'm not great with last minute stuff and it showed! I couldn't think of anything to make to share so I just told Brandon to pack sandwich stuff and we'd eat on our own. But then we got to the park and realized we'd forgot bread!

Fortunately, everyone else had brought a lot of food and had assured me that it was fine if we ate even though we'd only brought raspberries to share.

Jori had salad and a soup. Olyvia had a salad and soup. Hanah brought 3 sour dough pizzas. Chandler and Lindsay brought things too. There was also a lot of dessert. It was good to be among friends that had my back.

Everyone had fun talking. Chandler's husband Cort was telling us about the dunk tank that he and Chandler were renting for a stake activity on Saturday. They were renting it from the City of Filer. If they were using it within city limits the Filer fire department would come and open a fire hydrant so they could fill the tank. But since they would be using it in Twin Falls that wasn't an option. So Cort needed $1,100 (Or possibly $11,000 I'm not good with spoken number amounts) to rent the special fire hydrant tapping tool from the City of Twin Falls. The money was refundable after the tool was returned.

So he was telling us all the ins and outs of how to rent the tool and then tap the hydrant to fill the tank. I was like, "I love that you know all about this."  He says that his family calls him Cort the Carney. He's always dreaming up plans to make a ferris wheel or a roller coaster or some other crazy thing like that.

Brandon wasn't called for rehearsal until later in the evening. So he was able to be at the dinner for a lot longer than we planned. That was nice.

On Tuesday Derrick did have that orthodontist appointment. They were fixing a bracket that broke - again.

Charlotte and Lydia have given up on Art Club on Wednesdays. It was too boring for them. (The club was doing stuff like painting rocks and Charlotte and Lydia are way beyond that.) So they have started going to Yarn Club on Tuesdays. A lot of their friends were in yarn club so they went to have a chance to hang out with their friends and just talk and crochet. It sounds so relaxing.

They spend a lot of time discussing whether the boy who has been bothering Lydia is doing it because he is trying to flirt or because he's just trying to be annoying. The consensus is that he likes her. But he is learning  A LOT of hard lessons about how to win over a girl like Lydia. I'm at the point where I almost feel bad for him - but he also has been really annoying so he needs to be a little more mature in how he interacts with girls if he wants them to actually like him.

Anyway, all that is to say that I've ended up with more time on my hands on Tuesday afternoons. It used to be I would leave work and pick up the girls, but now I have extra time. So on this Tuesday I went to Goodwill and looked for some accessories to go with my 4th Wall dress. I found a long sweater and a belt. Here I am at home taking pictures to send to Jori.

That evening I spent some time outside moving grasses. This giant pompas grass is a volunteer. It's making it hard to see out of our driveway when we are backing up so it was time to move it.
I dug it up and put it in the side yard in front of my bedroom window. We'll see if it works. The last grass I moved her didn't transplant, but I also kind of forgot to water it. So hopefully this one works.
And here's what the spot looks like without the grass.
I also moved some smaller decorateive grass from the front flower beds to some beds behind the garage. We'll see if those take as well.

Wednesday was Veronica's actual birthday. She was so excited to finally be 12. We've been teasing her about how she can "finally" sit in the front seat of the car. (It's funny because I've been letting her sit there with no reservations since she was at least 10. And I know I let her in the front seat occasionally starting around 8.)  We took this silly picture to joke about it.

And we took this one too. But she didn't want me to put either of them on instagram.
Wednesday was one of the days my body decided to have a low grade panic attack for no reason. I just didn't feel well at all the whole day and I felt like I was going to start crying at any minute.

I got through Scripture Study alright though. It was our last meeting for two weeks. We'd finished Part 1 of Faith After Doubt and so we were taking a little break before starting Part 2.

Jori and I were supposed to go shopping together afterward, but I had to cancel. I was feeling like a mess and all I wanted to do was sleep. So I spent the afternoon resting. I watched Act 1 of Hamilton and that was nice.

After school Veronica had theatre. She took mini cupcakes in to share with her class. We had home made pizza for dinner and then did presents. She'd opened two of our gifts at her party on Saturday and then she opened the other two on her real birthday.

One was another gem display case and one was a crown made out of crystals.
Then we had root beer floats. They were so good.

Brandon had to go to rehearsal. The kids didn't have a youth activity because of the Stake Activity on Saturday. So everyone stayed home and we played green thumb. Lydia was so nice to me. She sensed that I didn't want to sit on the floor to play so she went and got the card table so I could sit on the comfy couch.  We had a lot of fun playing.

I felt a lot better on Thursday - thank goodness. This didn't happen on this Thursday, but on a previous Thursday Charlotte had gone on a field trip for her Agriculture class - to an actual field. They analized soil samples. Charlotte is feeling like the class was a bait and switch. She was told they would study animals. But so far it's all just plants and soil science. But she did like the field trip because it was fun to get out of school.

The exciting thing about this Thursday was that Derrick went to his friend Max's house after school. Max is in the ERC with Derrick. He's also autistic and has struggled socially. He and Derrick have become good friends and so Max's mom wrote me a note asking if Derrick could come over. So we started texting and got that all set up. Both boys were so excited. And so were both moms. Derrick has a lot of friends in his church group, and they are very nice to him, but there's always kind of a distance because he's so different. But Max and Derrick don't have that distance. So me and Max's mom and thrilled that they can hang out together.

On Thursday night we got everything packed for our camping trip on Friday. We were going to Bruneau Dunes. This would be our 4th time camping there. Two years ago we'd camped with Jori and her family. This year we'd invited more people along.

I was feeling a little off again so I mostly supervised while Brandon and the kids got things from the garage and packed them.

On Friday I woke up with another low grade panic attack rising in my body. That was not good. I had so much to do. On of the big things was to go grocery shopping. I've been grocery shopping on Friday's after work. But this time I decided to go right after I dropped the kids off. That way the store would be less crowded. I'm glad I did that, but it was still pretty rough. I was taking deep breaths the whole way through the store. I kept thinking, "No, you will NOT fall apart on the baking aisle."

I took all the food home and put away the perishable stuff. Then I went to work. Work was actually pretty calming. I put on piano music to listen to and then just spent time with numbers and charts and spreadsheets. I think it shows how much I like my job when my job is the calmest part of my day.

Then I went home and went to work getting things ready for the camping trip.  A lot of it was food related. I made a pasta salad - it had lots of tomatoes that I picked from my garden. I also picked raspberries to go with yogurt in the morning.

I put everything into the cooler and packed the dry foods in our food crate. At 2:45 it was time to start picking up the kids. Veronica hates her 7th period so I went to pick her up from school so she didn't have to go to that. (And so we didn't have to wait for her to come home at 4:00.) Then I drove her across town to Derrick's school where we picked him up early. While we were driving there she was like, "Oh this is really far."  I was like, "Yeah, that's why I'm always hurrying you out of the car when I drop you off so I can get Derrick to school mostly on time."

After we got Derrick we went to the high school and picked Charlotte and Lydia up at their normal pick up time.  Brandon was home a little after we all were. But he still needed to pack up some stuff. We were already planning to take two cars because we just have so much stuff and it's easier this way. So I left with Derrick and Veronica in the van. Brandon and the twins would leave a little behind us and Lydia drove so she could get driving hours.

The drive was a little less than 90 minutes and it felt really quick. Soon we were pulling up to our campsite. Rachel and her husband Ethan and their son were already there. We started putting up our tent and while we were working on that Jori arrived with Tim and their 4 kids. Brandon and the twins showed up a little after them.

After the tents were up Rachel built a fire at her fire pit and we all congregated there to roast hot dogs.

Here are some random pictures Brandon took.
I wish we'd done a more official group photo, but these are okay.
Our friend Carol arrived with her four kids and three of their friends. She had quite the crew. I hadn't realized she was camping so I was excited when I realized she had a spot.

Some of our other friends had said they were coming for the evening, but we never saw them. I guess that didn't really pan out.

Before it got dark I took my kids over to the little dune for them to slide on it.

I love this picture of them climbing it.
The moon was really pretty, but of course my camera didn't do it justice.
The kids had fun sliding down the back of the dune. They were all pretty wild and I was glad they got their wiggles out.

After it got dark we went back to our campsite. Brandon had set up our telescope a little ways away so we went over to him. Charlotte and Lydia sat on the roof of the pilot and hung out up there a long time. I talked with Rachel.

Derrick put himself to bed around 9:15. Veronica wanted to go to bed around 10:00. I helped get her situated and decided that I might as well go to bed too. She and I shared an air mattress. Derrick and Brandon shared another one. Charlotte and Lydia were in their own tent near us.

Charlotte and Lydia went to bed around 11:00. Brandon and some of the other adults stayed up until 1:00.

I slept okay, but I never full felt comfortable. My sleeping bag seemed to be wadded up all weird. And at one point the seams on my shirt were pressing into me and hurting my skin.

But I woke up feeling way less anxious than I had on Friday so that was worth something.

I made egg and sausage sandwiches for my kids . . . and some of Jori's kids. She was like, "I should just have you feed my kids. They didn't care about my breakfast."  But at lunch the tables were turned. My kids ate the peanut butter and honey sandwiches that she made for her kids. (Derrick downed like 3 super fast.)

We talked and chatted and had a good morning and then all of a sudden it was 10:00 and we decided it was time to pack up.

Here are Charlotte, Lydia, and Derrick sitting on the bench waiting after everything was packed up.

There had been some debate about climbing the big hill as a group. But ultimately we decided that was something none of us wanted to do that day. So instead we went back to the little hill. Brandon and I set up our canopy over a picnic bench so there could be some shade. We put the water cooler on the table because I knew every kid was going to come off the hill super thirsty.  It was a nice hang out spot.
It really was a tiny oasis in a bunch of sun. The kids played for like 90 minutes or more. Then they came and ate.
Around 2:00 we packed up the stuff and everyone started heading home. Here are my kids trying to catch a lizard.
Back at home we took showers and unpacked. Our stake activity was starting at 4:30. I really wanted to go for two reasons. 1. They were providing free hambergers and hot dogs and that meant I didn't have to cook dinner and 2. I wanted to support the activity that Chandler had been working on.

Last year this activity was held at Morning Sun Park which is in our Stake boundaries so some people could walk to it. That was about the only pro that park had going for it. There were no bathrooms, there was hardly any seating, and there was no shade. Our ward had been crowded around one of the small trees.

Chandler is in the Stake Primary Presidency and she ended up on the committee to plan this event. She pushed hard to have the location changed to Frontier Park by CSI. She wanted it there because there was lots of pavilion seating, SHADE, pickelball courts, a soft ball diamond, more shade, and lots of room for people to spread out.

They were also going to have that dunk tank, and Cort's cool spinny ride. So the event sounded so fun.

Brandon and Charlotte and Lydia still needed to shower so I took Derrick and Veronica ahead of time. We stopped at Smiths and bought chips to bring as a side dish.

Veronica and Derrick were pretty tired and not exactly excited to go to the event. But they were in okay moods. This is until Veronica walked into a bench near the Pickleball Court. She bonked her knee pretty bad and that ended any fun. We just got our burgers and hot dogs and left.

But when Brandon showed up he had a great time. He talked to EVERYONE that he knew.

Back at home Derrick had been eagerly awaiting a package for several days. It was his computer monitor that he had saved up $70 for. As soon as he got it he took it downstairs. He figured out how to hook it up to his chrome book all on his own. Later he proudly showed me and Brandon how he could transfer the chrome book screen to his monitor.

He has quite the set up now with a new monitor and the keyboard and mouse. Now he just has to save up for the computer tower.  And yes, I know this is a computer in his bedroom - but honestly I didn't think he'd get this far. I was like, "yeah sure you can save up for a computer to go on your free computer desk."  I thought he'd give up after the keyboard and mouse.
I spent most of the evening in low power mode. But at 8:45 I started getting ready for 4th Wall night. I took a lot of time with my hair and make up. My make up was probably my favorite I've ever done in a really long time.

Brandon started getting ready like 20 minutes after I did and I was so jealous that he just had to throw on some clothes and was basically done. His fluffy hair really went with the 70s vibe. His shirt had little jet airplanes on it.
We went to Red Hawk around 9:45 and met up with everyone who was coming from Godspell. A lot of people will see the play and go to 4th Wall on the same night. But we find it's better if we see it one night and do 4th Wall another. That way we don't leave the kids home alone for hours and hours. Brandon took a picture of me in front of the fireplace, but the lighting sucked and washed out my dress that was actually quite colorful.

We had such a fun time talking to people. These 4th Wall nights are really fun for socializing. But they also end up as crazy networking opportunities. Some of the things never pan out, but it's still so fun to talk about possibilities.

Jared talked to Brandon and I about having the twins come paint a mural on the back wall of the Orpheum. I told him Lydia had to finish the mural on the back of my garage first.

I ended up sitting by Cameron and Laura Secaur. I knew them, but hadn't ever really talked to them. Cameron had composed the music for Much Ado and so I was complementing him on that. He was also the Music Director for Godspell. And, most importantly, he's the music director for Anastasia. So we talked about that a lot.

Laura is doing the costumes and set for Anastasia. So somehow Brandon is now somehow involved in helping build that set. (We'd already decided that me and the girls would do this play and he'd stay home with Derrick. So he'll have time to help with the set.) We talked a lot about her goals for this play.

I was like, "I just want to be in it. I'll take the smallest role as long as I can sing "Stay I Pray You.""

I'd ordered a hamberger and a rootbeer float. The prices are crazy, and it's after 10:00 so Brandon and I usually split the food. But here it is before I cut the burger in half.
And here I am again. I was trying to get a picture of the back of my head reflecting in the window.
Brandon was talking with Crayson, Archer, and Matteau when I went to pay. When I was done I came up to them and Brandon asked, "Did you need my card to pay?"  I was like, "No I had my own. This dress has pockets. It's like I'm a liberated woman!"

Archer laughed and said, "Oh just like a liberated woman? You aren't actually one?"

And I was like, "Yeah look at me be so independent as I pay with my joint checking account." It was really funny.

We were tired and so around 11:30 we said our (long) goodbyes to everyone and headed home. At home I took the elastics out of my hair and was like, "Whoa, I look amazing."  So I took a few selfies and this was the best one and I'm using it for everything right now.

Just as I was about to get into bed I checked my phone and saw a notification that Russel M Nelson has passed away around 10:00 that night.

He was 101 so it's not like it was a surprise, but it was still a little bit of a surprise. And then I realized that Dallin H Oaks would be the next president of the church and I was like, "Oh no." I've been kind of dreading this for a while. My feelings are complicated and I don't exactly have the words for all of it, but the simplest thing is that I feel like he is a bully and I don't want to support a bully.

So Sunday was spent doing a lot of soul searching as I try to navigate how much I want to engage with the church going forward. Its really really really complicated, but my basic instinct is to stay for now. But we'll see.

Sunday night we watched two episodes of Wednesday. The last one we watched had a really pretty cello arrangement of REM's "Losing My Religion."  The phrase losing my religion really means something akin to losing my cool or getting angry. But I was feeling that song on a whole new level.

Oh, life is biggerIt's bigger than you, and you are not meThe lengths that I will go toThe distance in your eyesOh no, I've said too muchI set it up
That's me in the cornerThat's me in the spotlight, losing my religionTrying to keep up with youAnd I don't know if I can do itOh no, I've said too muchI haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughingI thought that I heard you singI think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper, of every waking hourI'm choosing my confessionsTrying to keep an eye on youLike a hurt, lost and blinded fool, foolOh no, I've said too muchI set it up
Consider this, consider thisThe hint of the centuryConsider this, the slipThat brought me to my knees, failedWhat if all these fantasies come flailing around? Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughingI thought that I heard you singI think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dreamThat was just a dream
That's me in the cornerThat's me in the spotlight, losing my religionTrying to keep up with youAnd I don't know if I can do itOh no, I've said too muchI haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughingI thought that I heard you singI think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dreamTry, cry, fly, tryThat was just a dream, just a dreamJust a dream, dream

Anyway that's kind of a downer to end on. But hey that's where things were on Sunday. The good news is that I haven't had any panic attacks since Friday. All the fresh air from camping must have helped me out. It's been nice to have a decent nervous system again.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

The week after Timp

It's kind of funny how it feels that September this year can be divided into "Before Timp" and "After Timp." But climbing that mountain was a big deal so it has divided my month.

This post is about the week after I hiked 5 miles up Mt Timpanogos. So just know that I was doing everything with a very sore body. I think my muscles finally felt better around Thursday or Friday.

On Monday September 15th my friend Kori hosted her "We Survived Summer Break" Brunch. She did this in January and when school started this year I was like, "Hey, when are we doing that Brunch thing again?"  She said that was the final push she needed to plan it for September. It was really fun. Jori, Olyvia, Shaylee, Megan, Chandler, and some other ladies were there. We had a fun time talking.

I'd gone to work for like 30 minutes before it started and then I went back to work when it was over. But it was such a fun way to start the week.

When I was back at work I got two very important calls/texts.

The first was a text saying that I was called in for Jury Duty on Tuesday morning. I'd been on call for Jury Duty all month, but hadn't had to go in. I'd even checked the website that weekend - but it was down for maintenance . So it was a bit of a surprise to have to go in with such short notice.

I texted Brandon and told him he'd need to take all the kids to school in the morning. And then I sent more texts letting various people know that my plans for the week might get all upended.

In the middle of all that I got a call from the Twin Falls County Clerk. It was the elections team asking me if I wanted to be the Chief Judge for the November Election. Being a Chief Judge is a dream of mine, but it also terrifies me because I have to be in charge of everything for two precincts. That's a lot of responsibility. I've kind of always planned on doing it when I'm in my 50s.

Shannon who was the Chief Judge last November can't make it work with her schedule this year. She recommended me. So that was flattering.  And there are only two city council races on the ballot this year. It's probably going to be a very simple and calm election day - not like the craziness of a general election.

So I said yes.

EEEEEKKKKKKKK

So yeah, it was a very civil service themed afternoon.

Veronica had theatre after school. She always meets me at the car and lets out an excited yell because she had so much fun.

Brandon had rehearsal for Sweeny that night. He's not as excited about that. It's been a tougher play than the other ones he's been in. But he's still having a good time.

On Tuesday I got up a little earlier than usual and got ready. I drove downtown to a building next to the History Courthouse. I was kind of nervous about going through security and finding the place where I should be, but everyone in the building was really nice.

I joked with the guy who did the security check for my bag. I said, "I cleaned it out for you."  Which was true, but also kind of hilarious because it was still really full. (I had a salad packed for lunch and a book in case things got boring.)

Then I checked in with the Bailiff who was really nice and had a genuine conversation with me about my last name.

I was directed to court room one and told that my number was 13. So I went in there and found my seat. There were about 50 other seats in the room. A lot were still empty. But some were full. And to my surprise my friend Lynn was basically sitting right behind me!

I know her from TFCC Bible Study. We caught up on things and she told me all about the plans for Bible Study this year. They are going to be studying Acts. They still meet Monday nights so I don't know if I can make that work all year, but it might work for me in November. It was so good to talk to her.

I told her that I was worried I'd get put on the Jury. It's just my luck for something like that to happen.

After a while the Bailiff came in along with the County employee who is over Juries. They welcomed us and then had us watch a video introduction to Jury Service.

Then we were told to wait a few minutes and we'd officially start with roll call once everyone else was situated.

A court recorder came in and sat down. Then a lawyer walked in and started getting his stuff ready on his table. Another lawyer came in and silently beckoned to the other lawyer. They both left the room quickly. I immediately perked up - I didn't know anything about what was going on, yet part of me was certain that some sort of last minute plea bargain was about to get worked out.

We kept waiting and waiting. I was starting to wonder if we were in some sort of experiment to see how long it takes 50 adults to remember they have free will. Everyone was sitting politely and quietly, but as time went on people were shifting in their seats a lot more.

I'd brought a book and at some point I eased that out of my bag and started reading. The book was called "Hey Hon" and it was about a lady talking about the Multi Level Marketing company that she joined, was really good at, and then left when she became disillusioned. It was really fascinating and definitely made that long wait less boring.

The Bailiff told everyone there were some "technical difficulties" and we just needed to keep waiting. Someone asked if we could use the bathroom. Initially she said no, but a few minutes later she let us all get up for a 10 minute break.

Then we came back to our seats and waited some more. Eventually the Judge came in and told us all that the person who was going to be on trial that day had decided to plead guilty. We'd had to stay there until that was completed. And now we were free to go.

It really was the best case scenario. We were out of there by about 10:30.

I was all dressed up and really didn't have anywhere else to go so I went to work. When I'd left on Monday I'd told our receptionist, "I really hope I see you tomorrow." So it was good to see her.

Since I'd gone to work earlier than usual on Tuesdays I was off work earlier. I spent the afternoon laying on the patio and moving the sprinkler around the back yard to water the lawn.

Later I watered all the garden beds. Here's the one in the front yard with zinnias and comsmos. It's so pretty.

I also finally got around to doing something with my peaches. I'd had really bad timing with the peaches this year. I probably should have picked them the previous week and then canned them or done something with them over the weekend. But I just didn't quite have time for all of that. So by the time I could pay attention to the peaches a lot of them had fallen off the tree or been pecked at by birds. The chickens were given most of the peaches this year. (I'm so glad we have chickens because then I don't feel like these peaches completely went to waste) But there were four good ones.
I made peach salsa with jalapeno peppers and a red onion that I grew.

On Wednesday I had my scripture study group. Then I TOOK A NAP. This was the first Wednesday since school started that I hadn't had to catch up on something. So I was catching up on sleep.

That night the kids had a combined youth activity at Candy Cane Park. They were playing capture the flag. Some of my kids weren't too interested in going. I told them I'd go and hang around in my car. If they wanted to come sit in the car they totally could.

So we all went. Lydia drove the van. When we pulled up at the park a lot of the leaders were standing on the sidewalk and watched her drive up. Some of them came over later and were like, "I can't believe the twins are driving!"

I cleaned out the car while the kids played. It was a huge mess. I'd emptied one of the totes the usually holds blankets so that I could use it to take spa stuff to the hotel in Utah. I hadn't put it back together. Also there just seemed to be stuff everywhere in the back. So I pulled everything out and got it put back nicely

I also went through the backpack of "backup clothes" that I always keep in the car. It's been a while since I went through that. I realized that every single hoodie was too small. So I texted a picture to Jori to see if she wanted them for her girls. She did.

Then I went through the other clothes and realized they were all too small too! So I ended up just giving it all to Jori. I was like, "Here's your backup bag starter kit."  All her kids ended up loving the clothes. We were hanging out on Monday and I think each of her kids was wearing at least one thing from that bag.

Really there should be a more direct pipeline of clothes from my kids to her kids. Veronica is only two years older than Jori's oldest. But since Veronica is so tall she is like 6 sizes ahead of Jori's kids. The only clothes that make it over to Jori are the ones that Charlotte and Lydia find in the back of their closet and realize they haven't worn since elementary school.

Thursday was a pretty typical day. After school I spent a lot of time sitting on the couch with Derrick. He's so obsessed with dinosaurs. He wanted me to look at a database of all the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park Evolution game. He would open up the info about the dinosaur and we'd read the description together and he'd read me the statistics.

Here's the one for Gallimimus.

This is such good practice for him. It's good reading practice, good talking practice, and even good imagining practice. He's always asking things like, "What if there was a triceratops outside our house." Here we are together.

I had a diagram of the different geologic epochs on my phone. So we'd look up where the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods were in time.  Some of the dinosaurs are the hybrid dinosaurs made up by Jurassic Park scientists. They are listed as from the Holocene Epoch. I showed Derrick that is the epoch we live in. I also learned that Magaladons are way younger than dinosaurs. They are from the Miocene Epoch.

That night I started working on Veronica's cake. She and I had decided to make a cake that looked like the inside of the Orpheum. Earlier in the week I'd taken her and Charlotte and Lydia shopping at Walmart to pick everything out for the cake. She was excited that I was starting it. I made a rice crispy base and also put rice crispies in a bread pan. I made a cake in a cookie sheet and another in a cake pan.

I kept working on the cake on Friday. Before Veronica came home from school I made chocolate clay out of white chocolate chips and Karo syrup.

When she came home we mixed black food coloring into frosting and frosted the cake with that. That would be the floor for the theatre.

Then I made stiff icing like what I use for Gingerbread houses. It's made with egg whites, creme of tarter, and powdered sugar. I added cocoa powder to turn it brown. We used that to start making the seats. They were made with a Nutty Bar and mini oreos. Here we are working on those together.

I made walls by sticking Pirouette cookies together with the frosting. Veronica made a sound booth with chocolate covered cookies and nerds.

We were so excited when we put things on the cake and they started looking so cute.
These chairs were especially fun. I'd been wondering how we were going to do the chairs and this was such an easy way.

Here we are adding more chairs.

We had to take a break so that Brandon and I could go on a date. We went to see Godspell at The Orpheum. This was the first play of 2025 that we didn't have ANYTHING to do with. We didn't even babysit Payton at all because her parent's weren't in this one.

But we did know many of the people in the play. Our friend Crayson was Jesus. Jared was John the Baptist and Judas. And we knew almost everyone else in the 10 person cast.

Luxie Graham was one of the cast members. I told Brandon, "I don't think she'll die in this one." (We'd previously seen her die as Epinine in Les Mis, Beth in Little Women, and Eurydice in Hadestown.) But I was wrong. The cast members act out various parables of Jesus and Luxie played the rich man who dies in the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. She made the death over dramatic and funny, but it was still the FOURTH time I've watched that girl die on stage.

The play was really well done. Crayson was such a good Jesus. He showed so much love and compassion for each member of the cast. I don't know if this is an official stage direction or a thing they did for this show, but he had a different fun handshake for each person. It was a cool way of showing that he knew them individually.

This play is kind of like "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." It tells the story of Jesus with a lot of beautiful songs. But it's not exactly linear. Most of it is just the cast interacting with Jesus and then acting out his parables.

It was very modern feeling. Everyone wore modern clothes. The set was made to look like an ally in a city. There was a chain link fence. They had two big wooden spools that are used for wire. Here's a picture if you still need help knowing what I'm talking about.
These were used as tables and the cast members would also sit on them.

At intermission they invited everyone on stage for a drink of "wine." (It was koolaid.)  I was like, "Well you don't have to ask us twice to get on this stage." So Brandon and I were some of the first ones up there.

Jared was welcoming everyone on stage. Brandon joked, "Wow, I think I'd like to be in a play here."  Jared said, "Oh I think you'd LOVE it."

When we sat back down someone asked how the koolaid was. I said something like, "Oh we drank the Koolaid at the Orpheum a long time ago."

My favorite song from the show was "By My Side." Our friend Lauren sang it with so much heart.

I was so curious how they would handle the crucifixion part - if they would even show it at all. It was actually done really interestingly. Judas tied Jesus to the fence and then flipped a big switch because it was an electric fence. It was a really dramatic moment - partially because it was so jarring. I'm not exactly jaded to the crucifixion, but seeing Jesus killed in a different way made me think about it more.

The rest of the cast takes Jesus down from the fence and lays him on the ground. They flipped those spool tables on their side and rolled them in front of him. When Jesus was resurrected at the end of a song the two spools were rolled apart. It was a really cool moment and great use of the set pieces.

We went out to the lobby at the end of the play. Crayson's mom and dad were there. They are in our ward. His mom was hugging him and would not let go. Later she went and gave Jared a hug. Someone said it was like seeing Mary hug Judas.

We talked to people for a while and then went home.

On Saturday the cake was the biggest priority. Veronica and I got up at 8:00 to work on it. We discovered we were out of gel food coloring. So we went to Walmart and bought that as well as some wrapping paper.

When we came home we put the walls and the big screen up on the cake. I'd made the screen out of three graham crackers that I'd put together with frosting-glue and then covered with nerds.

I was so excited by how much this suddenly looked like a stage.
Then we went to work on the set. We got out the chocolate clay and warmed it up in the microwave for like 10 seconds. Then Veronica rolled it into balls and started adding gel food coloring to the clay. I cut rice crispy treats into small squares and then we put the clay on each square.
These made the blocks of the Matilda set. We also made some bigger ones as the risers. Veronica added Mike and Ikes to the stage as the stage lights. I put an Orpheum sign on the screen.

I also made a carpet for the house out of more chocolate clay that I rolled out really thin with a rolling pin.
Then it was time to put the Teddy Grahams on the cake. This is what we'd been waiting for the whole time.

We started with the audience. We glued two Teddy Grahms together to make them a little thicker and easier to stand up.

Then Veronica started making the characters. She put one Teddy in a chefs hat to represent her as the cook in Matilda. Another got a black wig to be Trunchbull.
Here's the whole cast. Bruce Bogtrotter is standing on top of his giant chocolate cake. (Matilda fell over on accident in this picture.)

Here's the cake from the front.

And the back.
And look how cute these Teddy Grahams are up close.
We even had a guy in the tech booth.
I especially liked this Teddy that was out of it's seat to go to the bathroom.

And here's another angle because it's all so stinking cute.
And here is Veronica with the cake. We sent this picture to Jared before we put it up on Facebook for anyone else to see. He said, "Oh my goodness gracious. That is so cool."
I put the pictures up on Facebook and got a lot of responses. This was my most ambitious cake yet and thankfully it turned out great.

But I need to mention that I was having a low grade panic attack the ENTIRE time I was working on it. I'm not sure what triggered it exactly, but wow I was KEYED UP.  Veronica was so patient with me and kept saying, "Mom, it's doesn't have to be perfect."  I was like, "I know, but my body does not know that. It is freaking out."

So yeah, that happened.

We spent about an hour getting the house cleaned up and then at 1:00 we went to the Orpheum for a little dance lesson to learn the audition dance for Anastasia. Kaden and Lauren aren't on the creative team for Anastasia, but several people had asked them for help so they were having a lesson for anyone who was interested. I'm so glad they did that. The dance isn't that hard, but it's not easy either. They went over a lot of the little pieces and I felt a lot better.

They said, "This audition is mostly to see how you move."  I joked, "It feels like they are trying to weed out those of us with bad knees." There were jumps, there were parts where we swung our legs around, there was a big jump. After 1 hour of practice my knee hurt worse than it did after all day on Timp. But I learned the dance a lot better.

At two we went home and kept getting the house ready for Veronica's birthday party that night. I helped decorate the family room with streamers.

I brought the cake down and had to take more pictures.

It was just so cute.

I think this is my favorite cake ever.
I was really happy with how it turned out.
At 5:00 Brandon left to pick up the pizza. At 5:30 Veronica's guests started showing up. Her friends Sophia, Kyra, Hadley, Nora, and Amelia came.

They had fun talking for a while. Then we lit the candles and sang Happy Birthday.

And then we had to eat the cake. So sad!
Veronica started opening presents. For the second year in a row we'd asked people to bring a cool rock or crystal.
Here are all the kids from a different angle.
After they were done with cake and presents Amelia's mom came and got her. Then the rest of the girls watched Pacific Rim. Veronica had wanted to pick a movie that no one else had seen. And that was definitely a good one to pick.

Our friend Cort came to pick up Nora a little before the movie was over. Cort reminds me a lot of my uncle Johnny and so I always like talking to him. He had some crazy stories about the place he is working. Then the movie ended and it seemed like all the kids left around the same time.

I was like "WHEW!" It had been a good party, but it was nice to get it crossed off the to do list.

On Sunday we had a relaxing morning and then went to church. After church the girls and I went over to Jori's for a little bit. I needed her help for my outfit for Godspell's 4th Wall night. I was planning to just wear a black dress, but they changed the dress code for this one. They wanted it to have a more hippie vibe in honor of the show. They wanted color.

And Jori is the most colorful person I know.

So we went through her closet and ended up finding a dress that she got from Amy Toft. And it was PERFECT for the 4th wall night. (4th wall night is on Saturday it hasn't happened yet. I'll write about it when I write about this week.)

Back at home we watched the first episode of the second season of Wednesday.

And that's pretty much the end of the week. Thanks for reading.
